Lake Murray Striper Report: 6-13-08

The fishing is good as it gets! The fish are just finishing their spawn, and they have food on their mind. If you want to go fishing and catch the numbers with quality it's time to go. The fish can be caught herring with just about any technique: cut bait, free lines, & down rods.

The water temp is moving into the low 70s and the lake is steeling down. And best of all, the fish are biting! The fish are still located in the mouth of the creeks, but when you find the right one you can stay there and catch as many fish as you want.

This past weekend we caught and released multiple limits of keeper fish. The fish were hitting on all rods: down, free line, plainer board, & cork. However, the most fun was the plainer boards which stayed skipping across the surface. If you like to see the fish chase and catch the bait you need to book a trip!

This time of year marks our busiest time for charters. Please make sure that you call well in advance when booking a trip.

Finally, I believe that the weather is turning for the better! However, still pay attention to the weather. The water temp is moving into the high 60s and the lake is turning over. Once everything settles the fish will be in the feeding mode. Currently, they are on the move and you can find fish from one end of the lake to the other.

If we have a week of warm weather a thermo cline will appear and the fishing will move into the peak. Once a thermo cline develops the fish will begin group together. I have started to see a few schools appear but they have been brief and small.

My favorite way to fish is still with a combination of down rods, free lines, & plainer boards. But will gradually move to more down rods as the water temperature warms.

May seem a little redundant but the report is basically the same as last months. But pay more attention to the weather patterns. When the weather rapidly goes from one extreme to the other it makes catching a little challenging; however, if you can get a few days of steady weather the fishing will usually improve. Also, if a low pressure eases into the area a feeding frenzy usually ensues. Fishing in bad or good weather is better than working in the office.

Since warm weather has moved in the stripers are heading to the flats to warm up and chase bait. The flats adjacent to the river channel or large creeks are the places to fish. Just ride around until you find the bait and the stripers should be close. Usually it's too shallow to mark the fish and you just have to trust your instincts.

Having the right boat and gear helps in being successful at this cat and mouse game. A bay, flats, or john boat is really needed because I will often catch the biggest fish in three or less feet of water. I have a 22' Pathfinder bay boat with a tunnel and jack plate that's able to run in eight inches of water! This greatly expands my fishing grounds. In my Scout 242 Sportfish I need at least 2-3 feet to run.

When working the flats I will pull live bait on plainer boards, free lines, and corks. Just find an area free from other boats and set as many lines as you can. I will usually set 15 when possible. However, if the area is small or there is a lot of traffic I will set less.

Do not for get to have a buck tail and ice fly combo at the ready!

The stripers are biting! You just need to know how to find and fish for them. This time of year the fish move up the rivers and big creeks and when you get there look for the large birds. However, do not run your boat right on top of them, but take your time and ease toward them with your trolling motor. While you ease toward the area deploy the baits.

We use various rigs for this type of fishing: plainer boards, free lines, and down rods. The conditions: wind, water depth, and crowds help me determine how many rods I set. I typically do not fish around crowds because the bigger fish are not there.

Once you get to the spot look for the arches on the depth finder and keep look out for the bait on top of the water.

After a week of unseasonal weather the fish are scattered out, but the fishing is not bad. It takes patience and good technique.

To find the fish you need to pay attention to birds and fish rolling and if you see this stop and fish. Use everything down rods, free, lines, and plainer boards. The fish were from deep water to shallow and you need to use a trolling motor to move from the channels to the flats. If you need help with your fish finding technique book a charter, and I will teach you what works for me.

We were able to get two nice limits of fish ranging from 6 to 9 lbs.

The best bait is shad. Spinners has plenty, so stop by and get your bait and tackle.

Is it December? I had my doubts about going out to fish because the fog was so thick I could not see past the bow of the boat. However, we left the dock at Spinners by just using the trolling motor, and we were immediately hooked on nice 6 - 8 pound stripers. The action continued from first light to about 10:00 and we had a few hours before the next bite. The stripers were hitting mostly on the down rods but we had a few that were hitting free lines and plainer boards. By the afternoon the fog had cleared and the fish moved out to the Saluda River Channel and we used mostly down rods to end up with three limits of 6 -10 pound fish.

You could not get a better day for December 75+ degree weather and good fishing! Do not give up on fishing because its winter. The fish are starting to cooperate again and the bait run up Lake Murray is happening.

A lot of fish are being caught, but the fish are on the small to medium size. However, with the cooler weather the fish are starting to school and heading up the lake with the bait. This is a good sign that the big striped bass are about to bite.

Book a trip if you want to do a lot of
catching and casting to schooling fish.
